October 18, 2011.....Last week my bookings were light so I headed south to do a little hunting. Fishing most the week was great, I was told. Back on the water Saturday with a big group. I had Capt. Lee take half the load. We moved around from reef to reef finding fish at most and ended up with 30 something trout,16 redfish and 30 drum between both boats. Sunday was a 180. The fish had moved and the boxes were light. Monday we fished the Turfgrass Tourney We started off in a redfish rodeo, catching and releasing, looking for a big one, Steady action the first two hours. We finally left em biting and went to work on the trout with 5 reds in the box. We bounced around till 1:00 catching scattered trout keeping the best five. Our total string didnt win but Tommy Hanka's exactly 21 inch trout won the BlackJack trout trophy. Capt. Ken

Matagorda Bay fishing Report for October 6, 2011

Early in the week the bay was in great shape. We caught our fish drifting and throwing
Norton Sand Eels and bull minnows. Best colors were margarita and mardi gra.
The winds kicked up mid week and forced us into the back lakes. We fished live shrimp.

Matagorda Bay fishing Report for October 2, 2011

Fall is finally here. Cooler temps will push the shrimp out of the marsh and into the bay and get the birds working. This past Sat. Robert and Jerry Steves and Philip caught limits of trout. Live shrimp under Midcoast corks worked best.

Report for August 29, 2011

Drifting continues to produce trout and a few reds. The bigger trout are starting to show up. In the past week we've caught several 23 to 27 inchers. The bays are in great shape and full of bait. The surf has also been calm and clear most days.

August 14......Early in the week sw winds made it tough for clients. We scatched a few Tues morning. I had a afternoon trip as well.
The bay was chocolate by now so I headed into a back lake on a low tide that was falling. We ended up catching a half dozen reds up to 33 inches. The next morning was tough in the bay. We boxed 5 or 6 trout and a red early. Wedns afternoon was the best and worst trip I ever had. The conditions were terrible and the tide was extra low and falling. But we boxed 5 redfish including another bull at 32 inches. When we got back to the cleaning table, I laid em out for a photo and noticed a HOLE IN THE SMALLER REDS BACK, THEN A VERY SHORT SOMETHING STICKING OUT. YES AFTER PULLING IT OUT A INCH OR SO THE ORANGE TAG SHOWED!!! IT WAS THE ONE,A CURRENT CCA STAR TAGGED RED!!!!!!! Then it was over. This guy was not entered. The mood soon changed. We never even took the group photo.
On to happier days Friday, Texas AM archery coach Frank Thomas and his brother Steve from Arkanas wacked em. They had their limits of trout and 5 reds drifting the bay.
Saturday morning Allen Judy and Tim Rogers boxed a half dozen trout and 2 reds before the heat ran us off. Suday the wind went north at zero and we didnt get um. We quit early.

Matagorda Bay fishing report for August 08, 2011

Not a bad weekend for drifting. We've been fishing half days and getting off the water by 10:30 or 11:00 to beat the heat. Friday was the toughist day, boxing 9 keepers for Don Evans and family. Each day the morning bite got better. Saturday I fished with Steven and Meredith and her grandfather Nick from Bryan Tx. They were new to bay fishing, but caught on quik. Nick, at 81 years old, had some great stories to tell about crappie and catfishing on Lake Conroe that brought back memories of my younger days on that lake. They fished hard all morning and turned a tough day into a good box of 17 solid trout to 23 inches and one red. Sunday morning we had the best action early. I fished Jim and Larry Quimby. Larry had flown in from Moscow, Russia where he works and lives. He had just left a great salmon bite to meet up with his brother and sons, Scott and David. We found a good school of solid trout up to 24 inches with most over 18 inches. We ended our morning with 24 trout.

July 31, 2011

Drifting continues to produce although the bay hasnt been in great shape. The last couple weeks we've had windy days, then a couple calm days, then west winds and low tides. Early morning has been best and producing a dozen keepers to 3 lbs.for half day efforts. Twice lately, either prefishing or fishing a tournament we did leave solid keepers biting looking for bigger fish. This past Saturday, Matagorda held the JP Moody Memorial Tournament. My team...O ''fish'' ally the best....included Dale Smith,Owen, Aron and Trent.... We started off drifting mid bay and boxed around a dozen trout and a small red. Mid morning we went hunting for bigger reds. The third spot we stoped on Trent and Owen hooked up at the exact same time. The first one landed was just a hair shy of 28 and weighed a whopping 8.7 lbs. The other one was over 24 inches and fat.
CONGRADULATIONS to my team.Owens red took First Place Red and our total 5 trout and 2 red stinger weighed 25.7 lbs and took First Place Stringer. All winnings were donated back to the tournys scholarship fund. Way to go guys!!!!
Yesterday { Sunday} the winds backed off and the bay was settling and greening up and the tides were back. August is looking good. We've had a few rains lately and the bays are full of shrimp. Wading is also producing good boxes of trout and limits of reds. Also saw a lot of flounder being cleaned yesterday caught on rod and reel.

Matagorda Bay fishing report for July 5, 2011

Light winds and a stong incoming tide during this past weekend set up a good bite. We fished Sat and Sun. Both days we caught 80 to 100 trout and reds. A lotta undersize and boxed 20 each day with trout up to 22 inches.

Matagorda Bay fishing report for June 21, 2011

Despite all the wind, the past few days have been pretty good. Last Friday morning the wind was howling, the bay's were wrecked and the tides were too low to fish back lakes. But people still want to fish. I headed up the river, mostly to escape the wind. We set up and and instantly rods were bending. Undersize trout, skipjacks, and gaftops every cast all morning. We caught over 80 short trout and boxed a half dozen keepers. Sat. I headed back, but the fish had vanished. We moved up the river a little farther and found a better school of fish. We caught around 50 trout and a few reds, and boxed 15 keeper trout up to 22 inches and one red. Sunday was a carbon copy, 15 trout and one keeper red. Monday started off great, but the bite didnt last long. Seven solid trout and a flounder made the box.
